MARATHON RUNNER RYAN SHAY DIES DURING TRIALS

From NYDailynews:

Ryan Shay, a favorite to gain a spot on the United States Olympic team in today's marathon trials in Central Park, collapsed and died after being taken off the course late in the race. Shay, who ran for Notre Dame and graduated in 2002, was the 2001 NCAA 10,000-meter champion and the 2003 U.S. marathon champion. He was married July 7 to two-time NCAA champion and collegiate 10,000-meter record-holder Alicia Craig, who he met in 2005 at the New York City marathon.
Shay collapsed on the second lap near East 75th St. on the East side of Central Park. He was midway between the race's ninth and tenth miles.
According to Runner's Gazette photographer Clay Shaw, who was nearby, emergency medical personnel responded swiftly, using a defibrillator to to try revive him.
"He just hit the ground," Shaw said.
According to Shaw, Shay wasn't even rushed to the hospital, because the attempt failed. He was later taken to Lenox Hill Hospital.

Running a marathon is no easy feat and for someone to die doing something that they loved to do with the opportunity to represent your country, is very heart wrenching. Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.
