Columbus, OH -- Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher today announced that the Ohio Department of Development's Office of Small Business Development is teaming with the YWCA Columbus to host "The Best Way to Start a Home-Based Business," a workshop targeting women interested in launching home-based businesses. The workshop will be Friday, November 9, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the YWCA Columbus, 65 S. Fourth Street, Griswold Building, 4th Floor in Columbus. Registration is $20 until November 2 and $25 on the day of the event.

"Some of the most innovative and competitive companies can be traced back to their start as a home-based business, which play an important role in Ohio’s economy," said Lt. Governor Fisher, who also serves as Director of the Ohio Department of Development. "We are excited to team with YWCA Columbus on this informative workshop that will serve as an excellent resource for women, who are among the largest growing percentage of business owners today.

"This dynamic workshop will feature professional women who will discuss best practices in the areas of marketing, accounting, banking, legal, insurance, certification/procurement, and technology. Additionally, a representative from Ohio’s Small Business Development Centers will review the realities of business ownership and the fundamentals of creating a business plan.

Cynthia Lazarus, President and CEO of YWCA Columbus said, "At the national level, entrepreneurial women are creating jobs and opportunities at a record pace. Women in Ohio have long been at the forefront of this entrepreneurial wave. Providing this best practices workshop on November 9 is a perfect opportunity to connect women with the knowledge and tools needed to launch a home-based business, or any small business venture."

The Office of Small Business Development works to make State services available to small businesses to help inspire and create better ways of doing business to contribute to the growth and stability of Ohio’s economy. The Office manages a variety of programs and initiatives that assist small businesses in growing and finding success in Ohio.

According to the Center for Women's Business Research, as of 2006, there are an estimated 350,369 privately-held firms owned 50% or more by women in Ohio, generating nearly $58 billion in sales and employing 406,997 people. Among the 50 states and Washington, DC, Ohio ranks 6th in the number of privately-held, majority women-owned firms in 2006, 8th in employment and 9th in sales.

For more than a century, in Columbus and throughout the nation, the YWCA has served as a haven for women and families in need of support and as an incubator for women leaders in our communities. The organization strives to provide personal and professional growth opportunities for women and families, as well as offer direct services to families and women in need. Employment counseling, training and job placement all play integral roles in their women's residence and family center programs and it’s after school care and teen mentoring programs all aspire to introduce young people to entrepreneurial and career options.
